Main Model 9380

The solid cast alloy construction of the Main Model 9380 metal shear makes it virtually indestructible. In addition, this precision adjusted cutter is designed for clean edge cuts over the full 12" width of sublimation aluminum and brass, using tool steel blades. The top mounted guide ruler provides easy, accurate measuring, while the side adjustable material stop allows fast repeat shearing of same sized plates. The shear is also available with plastics cutting blades if desired (note- FR plastic requires a saw). At only $324.00, plus freight, there is no better value cutter.

Main Model 9385

The Main Model 9385 metal shear is built just as solid as the 9380 and is also designed for clean edge cuts over the full 12" width of sublimation aluminum and brass, using tool steel blades. The guide ruler is mounted on the side and the metal is pushed away from you, towards the blades. The blades are angled like a guillotine and come down on the metal at an angle. The feature allows easy snipping of even small slivers of metal off a plate, without any burrs. This is also a great shear, at only $310.00, plus freight.

Comparison of the two shears

They both do a great job of cutting. We have used both and you can't go wrong with either one. Here is the major difference between the two.

9385 - Because the shear cuts metal with a guillotine action, it leaves no burrs if you need to trim a small sliver of metal off a plate. Trimming can certainly be done with the 9380, but it is more difficult to not leave burrs (but they can be easily filed off).

9380 - Because metal is fed to the blades from left to right, the guide ruler is at the top of the shear. This makes it much easier and faster to line up cutting marks you put on the metal, with the ruler marks. The 9385 ruler is on the side and you have to lean over each time, to make sure of alignment.

We personally use the 9380 to cut plates for our samples. We want the superior speed and are willing to deal with filing off an occasional burr if we have to trim a plate. As we said, both are great cutters, so it is really whatever floats your boat.
